At Litchfield Builders, we believe every home should tell a story—down to the materials used in its craftsmanship. When a massive Bunya-Bunya tree on the old Glen Oaks Estate in Montecito had to be removed for safety reasons, we saw an opportunity to honor its legacy.
Rather than discard this rare and extraordinary wood, we had it milled into slabs to be transformed into one-of-a-kind custom pieces.
While this is not part of our core building services, we’re proud to offer a limited series of custom projectsusing this special wood—as long as it lasts.
The Bunya-Bunya tree (Araucaria bidwillii) is native to Australia and known for its towering height and historical significance. Its straight grain, warm golden hues, and fine texture make it both beautiful and versatile—perfect for handcrafted furniture and finishes.
Though more common in its native region, Bunya-Bunya wood is extremely rare in North America, making every piece we create truly unique.
Our team has used this incredible wood to craft a range of custom furniture and architectural features, including:
Dining & Outdoor Tables
Fireplace Mantels
Shelving & Countertops
One-of-a-Kind Bespoke Pieces
Each project is designed and finished by hand, showcasing the natural character of the wood while complementing the aesthetic of the home it’s built for.
This is a limited, one-time project. Once the Bunya-Bunya wood is gone, it’s gone—making these creations even more meaningful and rare.
If you’re interested in a custom piece that blends craftsmanship with a truly unique material, we’d love to talk.
